The grain freight industry is considered especially hard-to-abate as grain freight movements are typically characterised by long, complex, and multi-directional freight journeys often across multiple modes of transport, in regional and remote areas.
There are a number of factors currently inhibiting decarbonisation of the grain freight supply chain. These include:
- Technological availability and maturity
- Operational complexity
- Asset investment life cycles
Recognising that grain freight is a hard-to-abate sector, it is vital to explore the following ‘low hanging fruit’ opportunities to enable immediate emissions reductions whilst suitable technologies are being developed:
- Rail
- Performance Based System heavy vehicles
- Biofuel
GrainGrowers looks forward to working with the Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts on this critical issue.
