Hi everyone, my name is Asha, I recently did a profile for National Ag Day for GrainGrowers and now have the opportunity to give an on-farm update. Our family farm is situated 220km east of Perth in the small town of Doodlakine. We manage a mixed operation across 2,000 hectares, focusing on both cropping and livestock. Our crop rotation usually includes wheat, barley, lupins, and peas, alongside running Merino sheep.
Our farm typically receives an average rainfall of around 325mm. So far, this season has been above average, which has been a positive surprise. Right now, we're in the midst of harvest, which is always a busy time.
However, we are facing some challenges. One of the biggest issues is the consistent decline in rainfall each season. On top of that, the rising costs of inputs are putting pressure on our operations. Despite these challenges, we're optimistic about the future, especially with the opportunity’s new technologies in agriculture present. These innovations could help us manage resources better and improve productivity in the long term.
I’m proud to be an Aussie grain grower because we’re at the heart of producing quality food and keeping the economy moving, all while working in some of the most challenging and diverse conditions. It’s pretty rewarding knowing that the grain we grow feeds both our local communities and people around the world. Being part of an industry that’s always evolving with new technologies and sustainable practices makes me excited to be part of the future of Australian agriculture.
