Enthusiastic leaders passionate about shaping the future of the grains industry through the Grain Sustainability Framework (GSF) are encouraged to apply for the role of GSF Steering Group Chair.

The Chair will lead efforts to update the GSF, which was previously launched in 2019, with a focus on improved governance, stronger collaboration and strategic stakeholder engagement to deliver improved outcomes for growers.

The GSF's role is to strengthen industry sustainability by demonstrating continuous improvement across key sustainability priorities. The approach is designed to enhance the global reputation of Australian grain, expand market opportunities, improve profitability, and build a resilient Australian grain industry.

The GSF has cross-industry ownership and support, with GrainGrowers and Grain Producers Australia (GPA) taking oversight and responsibility for the initiative through the formation of the recently announced GSF Council. A Steering Group is also being formed as part of the process.

GrainGrowers General Manager Major Projects and Thought Leadership, Sarah Hyland, said recruitment was underway to find the right person to Chair the Steering Group.

"It is an important position, providing strong leadership of the Steering Group and ensuring the GSF operates effectively and in line with its objectives and guiding principles.”

Ms Hyland said prospective candidates are encouraged to apply if they have a working knowledge of sector-specific sustainability challenges, excel in stakeholder engagement, and possess strong chairing and facilitation skills.

"We are looking for someone with the right mix of industry experience, leadership, and stakeholder savvy to take on the challenge and make a significant contribution to future-proofing our grains industry," she said.

She said the objectives of the Steering Group were clearly defined with a focus on the following:

  • updating the Grain Sustainability Framework structure to reflect current material topics;
  • undertaking consultation through strategic stakeholder engagement;
  • developing and launching the GSF Annual Update; and
  • strengthening the value and potency of the GSF.

"In addition to being aware of sustainability issues and opportunities in the grains sector, the person will ideally have a strong industry and stakeholder network and be adept at cultivating relevant connections and partnerships. Strong communication skills and the ability to disseminate information are also essential," she said.

The role has an estimated time commitment of 16 hours per month, which is comprised of meetings, stakeholder engagement, and discussions with the secretariat. Meeting sitting fees will be paid in accordance with the GSF remuneration policy.

GPA Southern Region Director Mark Schilling said a planned approach involving a GSF Council and Steering Group that included key members with appropriate industry insight and knowledge would create a strong foundation for the GSF.

"This new and invigorated process will deliver a robust and sustainable framework to deliver results for Australian grain growers,” he said.

"Having the right people steering this initiative will ensure we can create a GSF that will have practical application for growers into the future.”
